Bureaucrats Sukhbir Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar have been appointed as new Election Commissioners for the Election Commission of India (ECI). The announcement, confirmed by Adhir Chowdhury, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, comes ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections.  Chowdhury stated, "In this committee, the government has the majority," alluding to the selection process. The decision is reported to have been made following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sandhu and Kumar's appointment adds new dimensions to the ECI leadership as the nation gears up for the upcoming electoral exercise.

Who is Gyanesh Kumar

Gyanesh Kumar, a retired 1988-batch Kerala-cadre IAS officer, held key positions in the Indian bureaucracy. He served as secretary in the ministry of cooperation under Amit Shah's leadership and previously as secretary at the ministry of parliamentary affairs. Kumar retired from his services upon reaching superannuation on January 31, 2024.
