Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Election Commissioners' Appointment

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has agreed to urgently hear a plea concerning the appointment of Election Commissioners (ECs) in the Election Commission of India (ECI). The plea highlights concerns that the Centre could gain an "unfair advantage" in filling the two vacancies following the resignation of Arun Goel.

The plea, filed by NGO Association for Democratic Reforms, calls for the reinstatement of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in the selection committee for EC appointments, as directed by a previous Supreme Court judgment. The NGO argues that maintaining the independence and neutrality of the Election Commission is crucial for ensuring free and fair elections.

In response to a new law introduced by the government, which replaced the CJI with a Cabinet Minister on the selection committee, the NGO emphasizes the need to insulate the Election Commission from political interference.

The upcoming hearing on March 15 will address these pressing concerns amidst the backdrop of impending elections.
